IN THIS LESSON, YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO ADD MULTIMEDIA TO MAKE YOUR LESSON MORE ENGAGING

Learning styles vary. That is why it helps to present information in different ways.

Some students are visual learners, while others are tactile learners. Another thing to take into consideration is lifestyle. Students are parents, care-takers, full-time workers, athletes, etc. In today’s fast-paced society, it can be hard to stay still and focus on a single task at a time. Fortunately, educational technology gives us the flexibility to incorporate diverse content into our lessons to help students stay engaged. Use a variety of media to share content with your students. Here, I provide you with a few examples:

Graphics:

Incorporate visual breaks by providing graphics that are relevant to the content in your lesson. You can also use this opportunity to include a photograph or handwritten text to emphasize an idea. The visual diversity helps students process information without getting overwhelmed.

Audio:

Including audio content, such as podcasts or interviews can be great resources for student who commute or need to multitask. It is also a wonderful way to give students much needed screen breaks.

Video:

I found videos to be extremely helpful when providing instructions. They often replaced bullet-point lists or content that would have otherwise been text-heavy and (potentially) hard to follow. When using videos, please remember to add captions for students who may find them useful. Also consider that sometimes, we may mumble in our lectures, and captions will clarify any confusion.

Presenting your learning content with different types of media allows students with different learning styles to process the information. It also makes the content more accessible to students who may be English Language Learners.
