IN THIS LESSON, YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO CREATE A MORE INTERACTIVE ENVIRONMENT WITHIN YOUR CANVAS COURSES

Encourage students to engage with you and each other. By participating, students also create course content.

Online courses do not have to be isolating. There are plenty of opportunities to engage with each other and create a feeling of community. One way to do this is to treat everyone like an expert. This means the teacher isn’t the only person teaching, and students are not the only people learning. Everyone is accountable for creating a nurturing learning environment.

The content in the table below is the result of a Canvas discussion, where I asked students to define the roles people play in the class. They defined the rold of the teacher, the roles of their classmates, and identified the things they would hold themselves accountable for. This discussion shows how students not only completed an assignment, but were active participants in creating class culture.
